DPW Highway Superintendent Retires

The Department of Public Works would like to announce the retirement of Highway Superintendent, Dan Powderly, as of January 18, 2012. Dan is a 38-1/2 year veteran of the DPW and has served as the Highway Division superintendent for the past four years. The Department of Public Works would like to thank Dan for his many years of service and we wish him a happy and healthy retirement. It has been a pleasure working with him.

Public Outreach on Fats, Oils, Grease, & Rags in the Sewer System

Over the past three years, the Town of Billerica has experienced an increase in the number of blockages in sewer lines as well as a dramatic increase in the frequency of clogged pumps at the 26 pump stations in town. In both cases, the culprits have been rags and grease.

In order to help our customers understand the impact of rags and grease on the sewer system, all homeowners received a flyer in their December 2011 water bills about rags. The April 2012 water bill will contain a flyer explaining proper grease disposal. (See the links at right for more information.)

Remember that these blockages can occur in the pipes in the public system as well as those that run from your house to the town's lines in the street. These blockages can cause backups in your house. However, if the blockage is in your pipe, the town is not responsible for the cost of the repair and cleanup.
