Automated Trash Pickup Begins - NEW
Automated trash collection begins on Monday, July 6.  Residents need to be aware that the new rules for trash collection must be strictly followed. Lids on the new automated trash carts must be completely closed. Excess trash in the cart will be left behind. Overflow bags are required for trash that does not fit in the cart. (Bags are sold at O'Connor Hardware and Market Basket in Billerica.)  Recyclable material, construction debris, yard waste, hazardous materials, white goods, tires, TVs, propane tanks, or similar items are NOT allowed in the cart. The cart must be accessible to the collection-vehicle arm, with at least 3 feet of clearance from any nearby obstacles.  Handles must face away from the street. Bulky items require a call to Allied Waste at 1-800-442-9006 by 5:00 PM on the Friday before trash day, to schedule a separate pick up.

If trash has not been prepared correctly, it will not be collected and residents will need to hold onto their trash until the following week. Follow this link for more information about automated trash pick up.

Please be aware that all trash carts have been delivered. If you have not yet received your trash cart, please call the DPW Operations Supervisor at 978-436-9178.

Cook Street & Alexander Road Project Construction
As part of MassHighway's Cook Street and Alexander Road Reconstruction Project, paving of Alexander Road from Memory Lane to Jefferson Street will begin on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 and continue through Thursday, July 2, 2009.  These dates are weather permitting. Traffic will be detoured as necessary around the work area. Please expect delays and try to avoid the area.

Recycle Your Old Trash Barrel
With our new automated trash collection beginning on July 6th, we have had many questions about what to do with your old trash barrel. The Department of Public Works recommends that those extra barrels be used as recycling containers. "Bottles and Cans" stickers are available at the DPW Administration Office at the Town Hall and can be placed on unused barrels. You can also save the barrels for seasonal yard-waste collection.  If you still have too many, you can recycle plastic and metal trash barrels. There are three drop-off dates to recycle your old trash receptacles at the DPW highway yard, 250 Boston Road: Saturday, June 27, July 11, and July 25, from 10 AM to 2 PM. The barrels must be clean to be recycled. Unclean barrels will not be accepted.  For questions, residents can call 978-671-1337. To see brochure, click here.

Stage II Mandatory Water Conservation
The Board of Selectmen has adopted a Stage II Mandatory Water Ban for outdoor water usage, effective from May 1, 2009 to October 1, 2009.  There will be an odd-even usage-allocation schedule, allowing odd-numbered houses to water on odd-numbered calendar days and even-numbered houses to water on even-numbered calendar days.  Citations and fines for violations are as follows:

  Residential Commercial/Industrial
1st Violation Citation Citation
2nd Violation $50 $100
Subsequent Violation $100 $200

Town Bulk-Item Disposal Services
There has been some confusion recently regarding the bulk-item disposal services provided by the Town of Billerica and its affiliated vendors.  Many Billerica residents have received a brochure from a private company for the disposal of items not accepted for regular curbside trash collection. The only vendors currently affiliated with the Town for the disposal of white goods and bulk items are Appliance Recyclers and Allied Waste.  Other vendors have the right to advertise their services in Billerica and some will accept items that the Town and its affiliated vendors do not, such as construction debris. While residents may hire an alternate company, they should be aware that these vendors are not affiliated with nor endorsed by the Town of Billerica.
