Q. I have a question about my water/sewer
     bill.
A. Please call the Water Billing Office at (978)
     671-0954, Monday through Friday,
8:30 AM – 4:00 PM, with any questions
     regarding your water/wastewater bill.
Additional information is available on the
water billing section of our website.

Q. Why do I have low water pressure or no
     water pressure?
A. Water pressure problems are usually the result
of a disruption in the water distribution system
such as a water main break, hydrant flushing, or a recent fire in the area.
It could also be caused by sediment in your water meter. Please call the Water
Division at 978-671-0957, Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM – 3:00 PM,
     with any questions or concerns.

Q. How do I report a water main break?
A. Call the Water Division at 978-671-0957 (they are staffed 24 hours-a-day,
7 days-a-week) with your name, address, phone number, and the location
     of the water break.

Q. I don’t have any water. Why and what do I do?
A. Generally if you experience a loss of water, this is most likely due to a
water main break in your area. The water has been shut off in order to
repair the break. The Water Maintenance Crew must wait for other
utility companies to mark out their equipment under the road before
repairs can begin. Repairs can take several hours. We ask for your
patience and cooperation during this process. Feel free to call the Water
Division at 978-671-0957 to confirm a break in the area.

Q. Why do I have brown water?
A. Brown water is generally a combination of iron and manganese (minerals
that are naturally present in water). These minerals become oxidized
when they are mixed with chlorine (which is added to the water for
disinfection). This can result in discolored laundry and plumbing fixtures.
Brown water can also occur when there is any change in the distribution
system, such as increased flow, a water main break, or a fire. The Water
Division has a rust-reducing product for use in the laundry. This product is
available at the Water Treatment Facility located at 270 Treble Cove Road.
and also at the Water Billing Office at the Billerica Town Hall located at
     365 Boston Road.

Q. How do I have my water line marked?
A. Contact the Water Division at 978-671-0957, Monday through Friday,
7:30 AM – 3:00 PM, to request that your water service or main be marked.
This requires 48-72 hours notice and may be postponed if there is a water
emergency such as a water main break.

Q. How do I have my water service shut off?
A. To request that your water service be shut off for construction or for the
season, please contact the Water Division at 978-671-0957, Monday
through Friday, 7:30 AM – 3:00 PM. This requires 48-72 hours notice and

Q. Where does the Town's drinking water come from?
A. The Town's drinking water is taken from the Concord River and is treated
at the Water Treatment Plant at 270 Treble Cove Road.

Q. What is the Town water pressure?
A. Pressure can vary significantly depending on several factors such as
location, season, and distribution system conditions. In some areas of
Billerica the pressure can be as high as 120 pounds-per-square-inch (psi).
If this pressure presents a problem in your home, you may hire a plumber
to install a pressure reducing valve after your water meter.

Q. Where can I get information on the water bans?
A. Once a water ban is in effect, it will be posted on the ‘What’s New’ section
of this website and signs will be placed around town. Water bans are also
posted on BATV and published in the Lowell Sun and Billerica Minuteman
newspapers. For more information on the various stages of the ban,

Q. What is the hardness of the Town’s water?
A. The hardness of Billerica’s water varies throughout the year. On
average the hardness is 40-75 milligrams-per-liter (mg/l) or 4.3 grains-
     per-gallon.

Q. How do I read my water meter?
A. Please click here for information on how to read your water meter. Learning
to read your water meter can help you discover water leaks, monitor
your usage, and double check your water bill.

Q. How do I keep my water meter from freezing in the winter?
A. Always make sure that your water meter is being heated in the winter,
especially during periods of very low temperatures. If it is located in a closet,
keep the door open and do not block it with household items. If it is in a
crawl space, make sure that it is well insulated from the weather.
